We were recently nominated by two people for the Mystery Blogger Award. We will combine the questions and Kevin and I will answer both. Thank you, Mae and Sarah, for nominating us! Three Things About Us

  1. We have been together since middle school. That’s over 10 years!
  2. We are scuba certified and love to travel.
  3. We love watching TV/movies and reading together.

Questions for us from Mae

1. Do you like to listen to music while reading?

Brooke: I don’t like to listen to music while I read but I love to listen to piano music while writing/typing or designing graphics.

Kevin: Hard no. I find the music very distracting and end up having to re-read to understand what I just read.

2. What are your favorite genres to read?

Brooke: Mysteries/Thrillers, Horror, and Sci-fi were my go-to genres before I started this blog but I have noticed I have been branching out a lot more with romance and historical fiction.

Kevin: Sci-fi is by far my favorite genre. I also read a good deal of historical fiction and fantasy.

3. Who is a character you hate that everyone seems to love?

Brooke: Jon Snow from Game of Thrones. I am just not into his chapters or the plot on The Wall. I really liked Ned because he was virtuous and honorable but Jon Snow takes it to an extreme.

Kevin: I’ve never liked Ron Weasley from Harry Potter for some reason. I think he’s just too average and seems to always follow the crowd.

4. What are your highest and lowest rated books you’ve read so far this year?

Brooke: I rated The Paperboy by Pete Dexter 3 stars but it probably should be 2 since it’s my least favorite this year. No 5 stars yet but a lot of 4 stars with I’ll Never Tell by Catherine McKenzie being my favorite so far.

Kevin: My favorite book so far this year is The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. It’s also my only 5-star read so far this year. My least favorite book so far is In a Field of Blue by Gemma Liviero, although I still rated it 3 stars.

5. Is there a book that everyone seems to recommend but you have no interest in ever reading?

Brooke: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson. Mostly because I am not into self-help books and I find the title off-putting.

Kevin: IT or any of Stephen King’s books. I just can’t handle horror books and have no interest in freaking myself out over a book.

Questions for us from Sarah

1. Who is your least favorite character from a book and why?

Brooke: Bran from Game of Thrones. I am always bored by his chapters and want to skip over them. I did not really like his character in the show either.

Kevin: It’s hard for me to think of a least favorite character since there’s almost always some redeeming quality in the end. However, I’m usually pretty slow to forgive/believe anti-heroes like Snape from Harry Potter or Murtagh from Eragon.

2. What’s a book that surprised you the most?

Brooke: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I knew it was a classic for a reason but I had no idea how relevant it still is today.

Kevin: The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. It’s on so many lists of great sci-fi books I decided to finally give it a read after never being that interested in the description… Turns out, it’s a great book and I loved it!

3. What genre of books do you generally avoid and why?

Brooke: I used to avoid reading romance because I thought it was all either smut or too happily ever after for me but I realized there can be a lot of plot and character development too.

Kevin: I’ll read pretty much any genre, but do try to avoid horror since I don’t like feeling paranoid or having nightmares after reading.

4. Is there a book that was released independently that you wish would be a series?

Brooke: I really liked The Martian by Andy Weir. I think it would be cool if he did a series about living on Mars.

Kevin: I can think of two but for opposite reasons. The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke because I love it and would like to read more of Alvin’s story. And, The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick which I really didn’t like but think the concept is good and could make a good series if it was expanded and explained further.

5. What’s a book you love that generally gets negative reviews?

Brooke: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I don’t know if it really gets negative reviews but more of high schoolers not wanting to read it.

Kevin: I love Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card and, while it gets a fair share of positive reviews, some of the author’s real-life opinions give the book a bad rap which I think is unfortunate.

I can’t really listen to music while reading either, unless it’s classical and has no lyrics because it disracts me far too much!

Great post, I loved your answers and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who cannot read and listen to music at the same time! I’m definitely going to check out some of the books you recommended, I’m really curious now!

I don’t get how people can read with the TV on in the background. I have to be really into the book and really concentrate if there are a lot of distractions or I start missing things or losing my place. Thanks! I hope you enjoy them!
