Recently, I joined an online book club, Whole Latte Books, and Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert was the book for February. I listened to this book on audible, mostly on the planes and trains on my vacation. I missed the book club’s discussion because I was still in Thailand at the time but I caught up afterward. Overall, I give Get a Life, Chloe Brown 4 stars. It’s funny and witty with interesting characters in a charming romantic plot.

Plot Summary of Get a Life, Chloe Brown

Chloe is almost hit by a car and realizes she has done nothing exciting with her life, especially since she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She decides to make a list of things she wants to accomplish in order to “get a life.” A few things on the list include: get her own apartment, ride a motorcycle, go camping, and have a one night stand. One day at her new place she notices a cat stuck in a tree and decides to rescue it, not an easy task with fibromyalgia. Red, the superintendent of the complex, ends up rescuing the cat and Chloe. Red and Chloe weren’t fond of each other at first but they come to an agreement. Chloe will help him make a website for his artwork and he will give her a ride on the back of his motorcycle. Red and Chloe are complete opposites. Chloe comes from a very wealthy family while Red is basically a starving artist. Their back and forth banter is hilarious along with their private thoughts.

Narration

I listened to the audiobook which was narrated by Adjoa Andoh. She is alright, not my favorite narrator. I think mostly because her British accent for Chloe reminded me of Mary Poppins. I like her but someone sounding like Marry Poppins and saying dirty things can be very distracting, strange, and off-putting. Her gruff accent for Red was amazing though! All the side characters’ voices were good too. It was easy to tell all the characters apart. I think Chloe’s voice was too prim and proper for me. I eventually got used to it so it didn’t ruin the entire book for me.

Romance Novels

Romance novels are a little out of my comfort zone. I mostly stick to thrillers. This is my 2nd romance novel so I don’t have much to compare it to. The Kiss Quotient was my first, and I preferred it over Get a Life, Chloe Brown. Both are 4-star reads for me though. I liked the narrator more in The Kiss Quotient, otherwise, they are really hard to compare. The characters and plot are very different, the only thing they have in common is the steamy passionate scenes.

Favorite Quotes

I also liked that the characters had real-life struggles, like Chloe with her fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. In other words, it is chronic pain. One of my favorite quotes about her chronic illness is:

“I started feeling afraid of my own body, like it was a torture chamber I’d been trapped inside.”

– Get a Life Chloe Brown, Talia Hibbert

It’s always hard to describe pain accurately, especially if you are afraid of what others will think and don’t talk much about it. It’s difficult to ever truly know how someone actually feels. I have had to describe pain before and the 1-10 pain scale is so subjective. I have never had widespread chronic pain but I found this quote very haunting and I hope that I never have to experience it.

Another favorite quote but on a happier note:

“So I’m doing it for you because that’s how people should behave; they should fill in each other’s gaps.”

– Get a Life Chloe Brown, Talia Hibbert

Red says this to Chloe after she is too tired and in too much pain to cook. It is such a sweet thought and gesture. Chloe didn’t want him to because she didn’t want to be a bother and they were fairly new in their “relationship”. But Red refused to leave and made sure she ate and got some sleep.

“So I’m doing it for you because that’s how people should behave; they should fill in each other’s gaps.”

Final Thoughts on Get a Life, Chloe Brown

Again, I gave this book 4 stars. It entertained me and made me laugh a few times but not quite enough for me to give it 5 stars. This book could be turned into a great romantic comedy if they focus on their witty banter. I would recommend this book to adults looking for a fun fast read (or easy listen) with a little bit of sweetness and spicy romance thrown in. I look forward to reading the next book we pick for the Whole Latte Books book club!

What do you think about Romance novels? I am trying to vary my reading and since I have already read 2 this year I probably won’t read another for awhile.

This review is a bit different for me to read because it’s mostly based on quotes, which is why your name is Quill Quotes? lol but I have been hearing some good things about this book, so I’m excited to get into it. It sounds like the audiobook would be a better fit.

This is so far my favorite book of 2020. I absolutely adored it and gave it 5 stars. Like you, romance isn’t my thing. So I’m highly surprised that a romance novel is my current top fave so far

Ah, I’ve heard so much about this book! My friend GUSHED about it saying she loved it and I’m glad you liked it too. I want to read I want to read. I love the style of your review, how everything has a little space for itself; the favourite quotes part especially. Was it a heavy read?
I get what you mean about the narrators. I remember losing interest in a book because I didn’t like narrator’s style.
    Loved your review sweets!

Great review! I absolutely adored this book, and as someone who lives with chronic pain and health issues, I can completely understand Chloe, which played a role in my 5 star rating. Although I didn’t do an audiobook, so I didn’t have to deal with the Mary Poppins voice 🤣

Thank you! I learned a lot about chronic pain from this book. I don’t know many people with chronic pain or they choose not to talk about it. So it was nice to see it in a book and to learn more about it.
