Quill Quotes Book Club The Long Game by Ann Leckie Sci-fi

Brooke’s Thoughts

I really enjoyed this one. This is the first in the collection that I thought actually made a good short story. The rest I thought weren’t developed enough or I thought could be better as a book. The story portrayed today’s society really well in that humans tend to only care about species that are cute and even then they don’t want to actively do anything to help. Corporations will do just enough to not upset the general public and will only go above and beyond if it has some benefit to them. I also liked the idea of making the next generation better and starting something good now even if you can’t enjoy the benefits yourself. I gave it 4.5 stars.

“Nobody can conquer you unless you let them. The real destruction happens inside you. As long as you’re fighting, you’re free.”

Kevin’s Thoughts

I didn’t like this one at all. I’m not sure what it was but I couldn’t get into the aliens and never got a feel for what they’re like. It’s probably the point of the story but I couldn’t see the reason humans would keep them alive unless they’re creating the resources or something that humans went to their planet for. Too similar to Avatar for me with the aliens being even further behind humans. Maybe if the story went further to see the aliens develop further but hard to believe humans would basically teach them everything for them to create a resistance and become a threat.

Favorite Quote

“All of us, no matter how long we live. Everyone dies, in the end.”
