Welcome to Quill Quotes Book Club! Note: Due to the recent passing of my grandmother we skipped the second discussion and delayed our final discussion. Quill Quotes Book Club won’t ever be the same without Janet Kramersmeier (1943-2020).

This discussion does cover the full book and will contain spoilers, so if you haven’t finished reading yet you may want to go back to the Dracul Book Club Summary Page to find our first discussion of Part I.

Quill Quotes Book Club: Dracul by Dacre & JD Barker, Genre: Horror, cover, tombstones and bat

Brooke’s Thoughts

I found this book extremely difficult to pick up again after my Grandma passed. She has been one of our biggest supporters for the blog and knowing she wouldn’t be participating in Book Club anymore was heartbreaking. I did end up reading most of it on the plane ride back from the funeral and it was a good distraction.

I really enjoyed Dracul. It had a nice mix of scary and thriller. Also, I liked all the little Easter Eggs and nods to the original Dracula. At first, I wasn’t sure I liked Bram Stoker (the author of Dracula) as the main character, I thought it was hard to imagine him that way but I got used to it. I also liked the authors’ notes where they discuss how Bram Stoker wanted to publish it as a true story and how the publishers made him take parts out. I would love to read the original version of Dracula. Overall, I gave Dracul by Dacre Stoker and JD Barker 4 stars.

In the end, all that really matters is family. Is that not so?

-Dacre Stoker and JD Barker, Dracul

This quote stuck out to me for obvious reasons.

Kevin’s Thoughts

Again, Kevin isn’t reading Dracul with us. He doesn’t really like horror and he is currently reading other books. He will join us again for our next book.

I had a hard time picking Dracul up again especially since I was reading it when I got the call mom had passed. I was thinking about how we had talked about the book on the phone a few days before her passing. She had wondered why I was using Dracul name instead of Bram on my first comments. In my mind I was thinking Bram becomes Dracul and he was fighting him off in his mind when he was locked in room. It turned out I was wrong about that concept.
I think this book would make a great movie! I’ve never read any other Dracula books so I can’t compare but I’ve seen many of the movies. I’ve always thought it is one of the most terrifying legends. I got to admit it gave me the chills when it referred to Bram’s story as real.
I would give this 4 or maybe even 5 stars. It was a true horror story!
I did like how it ended. I don’t think there was a better way to end it. I thought they would all die and only Bram would live on as a part vampire. I do wish Emily could have had a better ending but she was to far gone which was so sad.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone who likes horror and vampires.

Do you think Grandma would have liked the book? I think she would have liked it since she seemed to be enjoying it and I know she liked horror.

That would have been an interesting concept of Bram becoming Dracula. He kind of was a vampire since he was drinking Nana Ellen’s blood.

I have always liked vampire books. I haven’t finished the Netflix mini-series of Dracula yet but I like the first 2 episodes. I like these vampires better than Twilight’s vampires.

I really liked the ending with Mina coming to Bram with a letter since Mina is one of the main characters in Dracula.
I agree I would definitely recommend for any vampire lovers!

I think grandma would have liked the book. I always thought it was different that she liked horror since she was very religious and liked the good in everything. I figured got to understand evil to appreciate the good. I really liked the Netflix series. I didn’t get Mina since haven’t read Dracula.
Now I plan on reading the Institute by Stephen King. The beginning is good so far.

I always thought that too and you’re probably right!

I hope the Institute is good! I’ll probably read it at some point!
